The beauty of wood has been well-know to mankind for hundreds of years. In ancient China teak was imported from Burma and was used exclusively for the construction of temples and palaces as it was the most valuable building material.
After World War II Teak (Tectona Grandis) became a popular wood species in the manufacturing and production of furniture. Teak trees are indigenous to Burma, Thailand, Laos and India. In 1856 Burma established extensive teak plantations to harvest the wood for extensive commercial use. Unfortunately, the trend has shown a diminished supply of precious teak and only in the last 10-20 years we have seen strides towards protecting the teak plantations.
Agencies such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Pan European Forest Certification) in Europe have worked very hard to certify and protect the forests and to ensure that selective forest practices are implemented. The EU (European Union) and the individual European governments are very aware of the dangers of depleting our natural wooden resources and maintain very strict practices towards their wood manufacturers to ensure that proper wood is being used in their production.
My Trading Company offers European hand crated and high quality wooden products and will do our best to honor and select production facilities sensitive to environmental policies and practices. We believe in protecting our environment. |
